Summer is here

This is the 'start of summer bonus post'. Everything is growing so quickly that it would be hard to bring you a state of the moment picture. But here are some shots spread across the last couple of weeks.

My favourite plant out there is my fig tree. I had met a guy named Andy, who, with his wife, decided to sell their place, buy a motor home, and live out of it for their retirement. I stopped over to his place during his moving sale. As a gift, he gave me a big bag of frozen figs and broke a branch off his fig tree in the front yard. "Here," he said, "Stick this in the ground."

"You mean to tell me that it'll grow," I asked. "Sure," he said, "How do you think I got this one?" pointing to his tree. Actually, the main branch he gave me died, but this little tree came from one of the tips of the branch he gave me. I had rooted it in a separate pot. As you can see, it's doing very well now.
My fig tree a month or so ago

Two weeks ago What a wonder....it's growing, my fig is growing!

Last week

Jeanne has added tomatoes all around the tree.

Another wonder, besides my fig tree. Real passion fruits growing above our deck.  Dianne was here visiting a year ago when I bought the little passion fruit seedling from a shop in Glen Eden.  Things grow fast here!

Dan Miles says that to him, the taste of passion fruit means summer. He likes them best in smoothies. I told him that raspberries are my 'taste of summer.'

Jeanne's beans along the base of the deck,  This picture was taken a week ago.  This morning, the bean tops were above the level of the deck.

Zucchini by the fence. Pretty soon it'll be zucchini by the pound, ah, kilo.

And look at her rhubarb grow.  The stalks are thick and juicy.  Rhubarb crumble, here we come!
Last but not least are Jeanne's geraniums next to the driveway.  -djf

  1. It does not surprise me that Jeanne's garden in New Zealand is simply stunning. I cannot tell you how wonderful it is to see this beauty and growth as we face "nature's nap" here in Minnesota. I am doing my best to stay positive this winter and seeing your beauty in New Zealand helps me during the winter. Your fig tree is amazing. Did you ever think that you would have your very own fig tree? Life is just so interesting at times. Enjoy your bountiful harvest and we will enjoy sharing it in your blog this winter. McKenzie

    1. When I was a kid, I remember looking at a dried fig and trying to imagine what it must look like growing on a tree. Now, I not only know, I have my own tree growing. That is amazing. Harvesting my first fruit from it will be a red letter day. One that I will no doubt share with whoever wants to read about it.

  2. I really enjoy seeing all this lovely growth! All those plants look so healthy - and that really says something about the gardeners - especially knowing how difficult your Kiwi soil is. I am utterly amazed at that passion fruit plant! Yes, I remember when you got it one Sunday after church last November - just a tiny little thing then.

And the geranium is really something to behold! You guys sure are blessed with the greenest thumbs I've ever known!

    1. I just counted and there are now 30 passion fruits on the vine. It'll be fun to count them as we harvest them. I wish I could send you all smoothies. djf

    2. I have never eaten a fresh passion fruit - but I still have some of that delicious passion fruit curd Jeanne sent earlier this year! A passion-fruit smoothie maybe? by the way is Sokul's ice cream stand open yet - and if so, can you have a passion-fruit ice cream?

    4. The fresh ones are often a little tart for my taste. They are best used to flavor something like the curd.
Yes, Sokols Is open and you sure can.
I just got a recipe for home-made ice cream that is made without an ice cream machine. You can add whatever flavors you want. Guess what I plan to use? They boys and I are going to make it over summer vacation, when the pf's are ripe. djf
