The Begonia House

I know that I showed you this shot of the rose garden in the hills above Wellington in a recent post. I'm showing it again because this time, I can point out the Begonia House that lies on the right side of this picture. The flowers that make up this post were found in the right wing of the House, as you face it from the center of the garden.

I guess some of them are orchids. I show them today as a mid-winter morale booster for anyone battling white-out fatigue. ( and -10 temperatures)

As you look at them, imagine 90 degrees and 99% humidity. Imagine the air you inhale feeling thick as it flows down into your lungs.

The day we were here, I didn't really want to linger in the tropics so I didn't stay long among the blooms. I snapped and ran, but I thought of you looking at them as I did. You can take more time than I to appreciate the patterns and colors. Enjoy. -djf

So pretty! reminds me of the beautiful flowers I saw in the temperate and tropical houses at Winter Gardens!

Thank you for all the lovely pictures of the flowers. You are right that the 90 degree and 99% humidity made me realize that that heat is not always easy there either. I am not a fan of high humidity. Still, when it is 10 degrees below zero, it is nice to think about. Is that Jeanne in the background of the 6th picture. I did not catch it the first time as I was admiring the flowers. Now, I can admire the beauty of the flower and the beauty of our Jeanne. I will have to review them again and decide my favorite. McKenzie

My deer blind, a place outside of time and space.

This is a picture of my deer hunting blind. I built in in 1975 and used it until about 2010. I'm publishing this picture and text on November 15 of 2022, the opening day of Michigan's rifle deer hunting season, to remember all the years I spent sitting there and occasionally harvesting a deer. I think that the meat I provided for my family was only a small portion of the benefit I received from hunting in this manner. Of greater value to me was the time I spent alone, watching the forest and its many components interact. I had time to unwind from the stresses of my work, to appreciate our world, and even sometimes to pray. That blind was a refuge to me. It was cozy, and comfortable and I spent much more time filming the activities of not only deer, but bears, racoons, turkeys, squirrels, hawks, and once, even a snowy owl, than I did harvesting deer. May I suggest to all of you that you try to find some time and a place, where you can be alone, and where you can ponder and appreciate your life and your place in the world. It does a body good. -djf
