A not-so-little reminder of home.

When I was in the city recently, I took a shortcut from Britomart to Customs Street that I've been taking lately. I didn't know about it back when Britomart was open all the way around. I only came across it when we had to start exiting from the one of the sides because of construction out front. I used a couple of other pictures that I had taken on this short-cut on a previous post.

Look what I found this time. It was getting a lot of attention from other people walking through the 'Doughnut Detour.'

Fred would know for sure about this. I think that it's a 1959... (I sent this photo to Fred while I worked on the post and he told me it's probably a '58.)

Look at the trunk on that beast. You could pack your whole closet in there.

What a steering wheel. Pre-power steering I assume.   -djf

  1. That is definitely a car! Wow, beautiful. They used those big cars in the past for crime sprees so it was easy to fit a body in the trunk. McKenzie

  2. You're right. I like to watch film noir movies fairly often and enjoy seeing those old behemoths cruising around the city streets.

  3. That is one big car! Unfortunately I'm not a car buff and I couldn't make out the brand or model name on it. Fins were THEE THING back in the late fifties and sixties - and what are those on the front bumper - double horns?

Now I wonder why they call it the Doughnut Detour? Was there a doughnut place in there or is that where all the cops hang out? that is, if Kiwi cops are anything like U.S. cops...

  4. It's a Pontiac of some sort. I don't know cars either.

The Donut Detour is a little tunnel that extends through the buildings that make up 1/2 of the block next to Britomart. There is a cafe/coffee shop at the end opposite the Donut Detour sign. It is part of the lobby of a big hotel.

  6. It's fun coming across American cars now and then. Especially those from another era.
