The Avondale Market takes place every Sunday morning. We only go about three times per year. When we do, we take our trolleys with us to Mass and then hop on the train afterwards to ride to Avondale. That's just three stops toward Auckland from Glen Eden.
It is an enormously successful market. It was a bit too crowded this last trip. We bought just a few things which I'll show you shortly. On our way back to the train, we stopped for a quick drink at a cafe.
We had a very nice time. Here is the record of our morning.
We are arriving.
No clue about what these are.
Some kind of gourds here.
There was no English on the signs anywhere in this booth. Unusual stuff and many things I couldn't identify.
Whole dried squid
The scene just outside the Chinese place. That's Jeanne's purple hat.
One of the unknown items. The Chinese lady working this booth did not seem to speak English at all.
Jeanne's drink at the cafe. I had a beer.
This is a sopota dessert. The purple sauce is both sweet and tart and the coconut milk adds another sort of sweetness. This is one of my favourite new foods. The fruit is very dense and chewy. Wish I had bought two trays of it.
(I should have taken the picture before we ate most of it.)
I think this is the fruit...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manilkara_zapota
I had had this once before, but I couldn't understand what it was because the language issue. This time, the guy who sold it to me had good English skills.
These are noodles made from rice flour, water chestnut flour, spinach, and use pandan leaves for flavor. No food colouring at all.
They are very mild tasting and 'feel' in your mouth like well-cooked spaghetti noodles. You add the sweetened coconut milk that comes with this to the noodles. The result is slightly sweet and very refreshing. This is also top shelf. -djf
