I'll have a small flat white, with one packet of history stirred in.

I've done several posts in the past about New Lynn. You may recall that it was one of the early centers of brick making in the Auckland area. In those posts I showed you photos of a kiln, public buildings and pieces of brick art made with the local bricks. One of the buildings I showed you then is the one I am going to highlight today.

This past October, a couple opened a coffee shop in this structure that was originally a post office.

I think this building is beautiful. I love the bricks, the compactness of it, the chimney on one end. I'm very pleased to have had the chance to get inside it.

I was hoping that the interior would give some hint of what it might have looked like years ago, maybe with bare brick walls, but that was not to be. Oh well, at least I got to stand inside it and imagine the thousands of people who must have passed through it before me.

Here are the few photos I took. I bought a coffee and a base ball cap as a souvenir.

I like this sign. Coffee beans/tracks

That bench may be made of bricks, but it is quite comfortable.   -djf

  1. What a great coffee shop! I would love to sit outside on the brick bench. It looks like it is angled in a way that it would not hurt my back so much. The history is incredible. They have a gem there. McKenzie

    1. Yes, I think it's a gem too and they were doing brisk business during the short time I was around. I hope they are successful.

  2. I can't agree with you more, Doug! This building is beautiful and I'm glad the new owners didn't change much more than the sign on the outside. The brick patio and bench look to be more recent additions and a nice spot to enjoy your flat white in the sunshine.

  4. Well, the buses and trains are free, I like to walk and explore, and this place is fascinating. And the camera is digital. What more could I want?

  5. GREAT photos Doug! Thanks for popping in to our little coffee shop..and again today! The history of this building was why we were drawn to the site in the first place...and once inside we knew we could give it life once again whilst respecting it's incredible past; if only walls could talk! Original windows and frames and no exterior brick the same size; the imperfections within are what make it simply perfect! A shame many alterations and damage had been done over the years but rest assured we poured a lot of love back into it! It really it a quirky little gem that's for sure!Come back for coffee again, welcome anytime :-)
