Puttin' on the Ritz

The Youtube link below will take you to something interesting. It is the original 1930 Irving Berlin masterpiece, Puttin' on the Ritz. As I strolled around Auckland this morning, taking pictures and my time, I happened to think of it. This painting may have been responsible. Don't ask me why.  (As usual, you can clic back to the photos while listening, and I suggest you do.)

There seem to be hundreds of versions of this song available if you wanted to hear newer renditions. Even Bertie Wooster (fictional character) did one; well, sort of.

I hope you enjoyed it.         -djf

  1. I could not view the video from your link but I did view one that was from the 1930 original movie it said. I always loved the song and it hangs out in your head long after you watch it. To me, the blog with all the wonderful stairways reminds me of the old Busby (sp?) Berkley musicals with the long staircases that all the dancers descended from in the shows. Also, when I was in Toastmasters, I competed in a tall tales contest and my presentation was called "Putting on the Ritz". I don't remember the detail of it but I had fun. I don't think I went too far in the competition on that one but it still seemed to go over well. I am sure I did not sing the song in it as I cannot sing but I did do a little soft shoe shuffle I think in it with an imaginary cane. Fun memories of a great song. McKenzie

    1. Jeanne got into the song just fine so I don't know what be the problem for you. I could take it out and re-load it I suppose. Maybe that would work.
Wish you could do your soft shoe routine for me.

  2. I watched several 'puttin on the ritz' versions from the original 1930 movie to one by'Taco' in 1983 and even one by Michael Jackson as I could not view your link either. Too much fun watching the dance routines so I didn't keep switching over to look at your pictures.

But, when I was looking at them I imagined all those stairwells as leading up to some very ritzy venues.. maybe a theater, dance hall or restaurant where the hors d'oeuvres are as fancy as the ones in your cover picture (which by the way look delicious).

The one image that intrigued me the most was the mirror that appears to be hanging over the street - and the reflection in it! Where else would you see something like this but in Auckland!?

    1. Again, I don't know what's wrong with the connection to the song. Jeanne got in through the regular blogspot address, so I'm puzzled.
I do like that mirror as well.
