Nepal visits Aotea Square

Aotea Square is the site of all sorts of events. This weekend, Nepal visited Auckland.

I was here about 11:30 a.m. and although the information I had seen online said the festival started at 11:00, not much was going on. None of the food booths were operating and from the state of their preparations, it didn't look as though they would be ready for some time yet. If I had come mid-afternoon, I might have seen (and tasted) more.

Still, I got some interesting pictures that I'd like to share with you.

This was the last picture I took. There was a TV cameraman recording some dignitaries walking through the Nepal Gate. Perhaps this was actually the start of the festival, but it happened about 12:30 and by this time I was tired of waiting for something to happen...the food booths still weren't ready...

So I left. (and stopped at a Burgerfuel located just down the hill from the Square.)

I'd like to try it again next year. I'll just arrive a bit later. -djf

I'll bet that when you go next year, you'll get the full Nepal experience! It will be interesting to get your review of the cuisine and culture which hopefully will be faithfully represented at this festival. Looks like they were ready with the souvenir shops though.

My deer blind, a place outside of time and space.

This is a picture of my deer hunting blind. I built in in 1975 and used it until about 2010. I'm publishing this picture and text on November 15 of 2022, the opening day of Michigan's rifle deer hunting season, to remember all the years I spent sitting there and occasionally harvesting a deer. I think that the meat I provided for my family was only a small portion of the benefit I received from hunting in this manner. Of greater value to me was the time I spent alone, watching the forest and its many components interact. I had time to unwind from the stresses of my work, to appreciate our world, and even sometimes to pray. That blind was a refuge to me. It was cozy, and comfortable and I spent much more time filming the activities of not only deer, but bears, racoons, turkeys, squirrels, hawks, and once, even a snowy owl, than I did harvesting deer. May I suggest to all of you that you try to find some time and a place, where you can be alone, and where you can ponder and appreciate your life and your place in the world. It does a body good. -djf
