Mop-Head Hydrangea and Friends

Gary was the one who told me it was called a mop-head hydrangea.  I think they're well named.  Their heads are enormous.

It's a partly sunny, warm, and somewhat humid day (71%) and bees are everywhere in the gardens.  A fairly stiff breeze buffets those of us residents who venture out.

I've come to take pictures of bees on the mop-heads but I think it may be a challenge. The bees never stop moving. They are living their lives so much faster than I am living mine. And the wind is shoving everything around, including me.

But I'm feeling lucky and I'm hoping for a few good shots.

Here goes....

(By the way, there are both honeybees and bumblebees pictured. You know that all worker bees are female, right?)

Scroll down and see how the pictures turned out.

"Peek-a-bee, my name is Brenda."

"That's it, Bonnie.  I'm stuffed, I'm outta here."

Beulah loves the color blue.

Betty rests her wings for a moment.

Barb has two sacks full and a long way to carry them.

Bailey's eyes have been bothering her lately, but glasses are out of the question.

Bernadette does a quick fly-by, she's due at the hive and she's late.

Belle just can't seem to keep up. Somebee else already got this one too.  She tries so hard...

"I know I've been by this spot three times!  You try flying with one wing and see how you like it."

"Why is choosing always so hard for me?  I've been hovering here now for ages. They both look so good!"

Bridgette loves to scratch where it itches.

"What a buffet, huh, Bobbi?"

"You know Beth, this is absolutely, positively, my favorite take-away place. The portions here are huge."

Every hive has it's share of problem bees...

Bonita is lost again,

Bianca keeps falling off the petals and has to climb back up,

Britta has put on a lot of weight,

And poor Babette keeps bumping into things.  Her depth perception is off.

This has been a lot of fun to do.  I took at least a hundred pictures and whittled them down to what you have seen.  The bees were very cooperative. (They all gave me permission to use their photos and tell you a bit about their personal lives.)  I hope you have enjoyed meeting them.               -djf

  1. Love seeing all the bees so hard at work doing their very important job! I noticed that most of the bumblebees seem to have a white bottom - makes them even more endearing!

Thanks for introducing all the B Girls today! They are a delightful bunch!

  2. These flowers are so gorgeous. I love the creativity of the names also. Each one was unique! That is some camera. McKenzie

  3. I've been learning how to use it. I have some even better photos of the bees that I'll use in a future post.
What I like most about the camera is that it lets us see a world that exists, but that we can't otherwise see. Some of those shots were taken at 1/2000 second.
