Late summer 'duck pond'

This post is going to show you a progression of pictures starting in mid summer and moving in to fall.

Some time ago, I showed you one of the storm water settling ponds. With the passage of time, the vegetation in them has grown.

Take a look.

Here is a big old 'goldfish swimming above the weeds. Already they are getting so thick that  I think the fish have a harder time moving through them.

The weeds are now almost to the surface.

Starting to crowd the surface

And then, just recently, I discovered that most of the surface of this small storm water pond has disalppeared.

The residents are making do...

The pukekos seem less wary, they're coming closer to me than they usually do, possibly because they feel hidden by the grass.

Closer...

Pukeko Peek-a-boo!

  1. I love your photo of the two ducks, accented by the floating teal-blue feather!

  2. Is that the "duck pond" that has been so famously featured in previous posts and my own personal visit? It's hard to imagine that it has become so covered with vegetation as the seasons progress but yet it is very beautiful.

I like the picture of the 2 ducks too - almost missed that floating feather so had to look again! Love the pictures of the Pukekos - they are so colorful and so cleverly do their peek-a-boos!

I hope your fall will continue to bring a little more color into your natural world but those berries in your cover picture are doing a splendid job!

  3. It's a smaller duck pond and I don't remember if you went to that one.
There is one section of street downtown that has oaks planted on it and gets very colorful.

    1. that would explain why it didn't look as familiar. Does the one closer to home get covered with foliage like that too?

    2. This pond IS the closest one to our home actually. Go to google maps and put in Shiraz Place, Henderson NZ and you'll see the map. Click on the 'earth' setting and you'll see a very good picture of the pond and where it is in relation to our home. I don't remember if we took you over to this little pond or not.
The other, much larger duck pond that you definitely walked around is about 1/2 kilometer from our house.

    3. No I did not go to this pond. I googled it up just like you said and by golly there it was! I even did streetview and see what a marvelous little gem it is and there's even a playground! Do you have a shortcut via Gala Place or Graven Drive? That would make it only a few hundred or less feet away from your house! Still if you have to walk up to Sturges to Semillon it's a short and hopefully pleasant walk.

    4. Yes, there is a very short shortcut. If you tilt the earth picture from the Graven side, you'll be able to see the paved shortcut starting.
