Fishing with the scouts in Hobsonville

This is Amiri's second year as a member of the Cub Scouts. Meetings are Tuesday evenings and are usually held at the Scout's Hall in Te Atatu. All sorts of fun happen there. Just last week they made rockets out of old plastic pop bottles, powered by water and compressed air. Amiri's went the highest. Allie had arrived to pick him up a few minutes early and was just in time to see his launch.

Today's post is about this week's Scout activity. It was an evening fishing trip and families were invited to come along. Arram and I jumped at the chance.

This is the wharf where the ferry ties up and where fishing is popular. It's the perfect place for kids to fish. A high, very solid railing extends all the way around it.

The gangway from the wharf to the ferry. It's nearly high tide.

Here, our two fishermen are watching the ferry arrive.  See what I mean about the railing?

Thunderstorms had been predicted for the evening and over night. Here, clouds are building but nothing threatening was seen.

The evening was calm, cool and it smelled great to be on the water.

The boys' attention was mainly focused on their lines and therefore downward, but I had the opportunity to take some nice shots of passing clouds. They keep getting more impressive as the light changed...

Only two very small fish were caught this evening among the 25 or so fishermen, so our guys didn't feel too bad about coming back empty-handed. Especially when they found out that the scout leader had brought along chocolate fish for everyone.

It's about 7:30 now and time to reel in and call it a night. Just time for a couple of last pictures. That's Allie on the right capturing one more 'golden moment.'

"Red sky at night, sailors' delight?"

We saw some lightning way off in the west on the way home, but didn't see any sign of storms near us. It was quite a special evening.   -djf

  1. I love the pictures of the clouds - they really made your evening special! So glad you got to go along on this adventure, looks like you had a great time!

  2. Fred and I loved the fishing pictures and the lovely sunset. Fred and I both know what it is like not to catch any fish. That is just one part of fishing. Communing with nature and enjoying God's beauty is the other part even when no fish are caught. McKenzie
