Here are some pictures that reflect what's going on here lately. Some having to do with the abundance of the harvest, and some just because I run across all sorts of interesting things.
I was given permission to help myself to all the Butia fruitia that I want. Here is my first picking ready to be made into juice.
These are two types of guavas that I combine to make juice.
That's guava juice on the left and Butia fruitia on the right. They are more like 'nectars' than juice since they have a lot of body. I have kept the sugar to a minimum so they still have a hint of tartness to them.
Jeanne made a super smoothie the other day. She used pear, apple, banana, persimmon, yellow guava, feijoa, red guava, and butia fruitia. Some blackberry syrup that we made a year ago was also added.
Our oranges are not ready yet, otherwise at least one of them would have gone into the smoothie.
There are still quite a few feijoas on the tree.
Our peach tree, which has never produced a single peach, is winding down another busy year of taking up space.
I mentioned that we had some frosts. Here's the proof.
It's just about time for the boys to leave for school in this picture. The sun will take care of the frost in short order.
Look who (plural) got off the train at Sturges Road just ahead of me the other day.
Nice bird, huh?
These two guys were very friendly and the bird was happy to pose.
We haven't had a chance to try this yet. I had better hurry.
I love seeing all this gorgeous harvest! I can imagine how wonderful that smoothie was! The butia-fruitia reminds me of ranier cherries but without pits I'm guessing. I see your oranges are sure taking their time while your fejoia is just going like crazy! by the way, how is your fig tree doing?
ReplyDeleteI see you did get a respectable frost - I hope your winter never gets colder than that.
I'm wondering if the guys with the parrot had to buy a ticket for it? Sure is a pretty bird! (It is real, right?)
Seems that green tea flavoured treats are a thing in NZ. Is that ice cream offered at the place next to Sokuls? Did you try it?
Actually, the Butia fruitia have a large seed in them too.
DeleteMy fig tree is fine, but since this was it's first year, it didn't produce very many figs, and unfortunately, the birds ate several of them. It still has a couple of small figs on it but I don't think they will develop fully.
Our winter temps don't get much colder than maybe -1 or -2, and that's Celcius of course.
Yes, it was a real bird.
The ice cream was, as you thought, at the shop next to Sokols. No, I haven't tried it yet. I plan to buy a tub of it to bring home to the family.I better hurry before the shop closes for the winter.
I would have loved to try that smoothie. I love green tea so I would love that ice cream. Hard to imagine that Winter is coming for you soon. Stay warm and keep posting so we can share your days with you. McKenzie
ReplyDeleteI will definitely keep posting. I currently have 5 or 6 in the pipeline. It's second nature to me now to watch for things to photograph so I can pass them along.
